As predicted, the consumer price index (CPI) in December did not undergo a sudden mutation and the index for the whole year has been restrained within the targeted level.
According to statistics from the General Statistics Office, CPI increased only 0.5% compared to November, bringing the index for the whole year to 6.6%, lower than the level expected by the State Bank of Vietnam and much lower than the target set by the National Assembly (lower than the growth rate).
Thus, the target to restrain the CPI growth in 2006 set by the State Bank of Vietnam has been achieved. The 6.6% CPI level has also been the most satisfactory level during the past three years (in 2005, the figure was 8.4% and it was 9.5% in 2004).
In 2007, the National Assembly has set a target to keep the CPI increase lower than the economic growth of 8.2%. According to the State Bank Governor, this is quite a “soft” target.
