The Ministry of Trade has predicted consumption of goods to rise by 20 to 30 per cent during the holiday season extending to the Lunar New Year.

The ministry has asked trade departments and businesses to stock goods to meet rising demand during this period, issued instructions to related agencies to combat smuggling, trade violations, counterfeit goods and guarantee that food meet safety and hygiene standards.

Meanwhile, supermarkets and trade centres have started a special promotional programme in Ha Noi from December 22 to 29.

Nguyen Manh Hoang, director of the Ha Noi Trade Department, said that 49 trade centres and supermarkets run by 23 enterprises would take part in the event.

Electronic products, telecommunication equipment, home appliances, garments and foodstuff would be among the items offered during this sale, Hoang said. According to Hoang, the campaign would increase sales by 30 per cent compared to normal days.

Ministry keeps vigil

The Ministry of Finance has started checking retail prices of goods in large trading centres and supermarkets in the provinces of Can Tho, Dong Nai and HCM City in a bid to restrict random increase in prices of goods during the holiday season, starting late November to the Lunar New Year in February, the ministry said.

The ministry’s inspectors will ensure that pricing in supermarkets and trade centres follow the regulations of the municipal finance departments and related offices of Can Tho, Dong Nai and HCM City.

The ministry will co-operate with the domestic Market Watch Team on fixing retail prices in supermarkets and trade centres which include service charges such as air and transport costs.

According to an official of the ministry’s Price Managing Department, relevant agencies need to work out a plan on market price adjustment to balance demand and supply of goods during the holiday season.

Traders violating price regulations will be fined between VND200,000 and VND30 million ($12-$1,890) depending on each case, the Ministry of Finance said.
